Television broadcast
(analog NTSC standard)
For more than 60 years, the U.S. relied upon the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard for broadcast television. This analog standard is set to be replaced by the new Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital standard by February 17th, 2009. Some low-power TV repeaters and translators may continue to use the analog NTSC format after this date, but all full-service television stations will be digital-only after that time. Both standards fit into a single 6 MHz channel. The NTSC signal contains three separate analog signals: video (vesitigial sideband AM); chrominance (phase and amplitude modulated); and audio (a stereo FM signal). The vestigial lower sideband of the video signal is particularly evident in this plot, which covers TV channel 7.
